Many of you may wonder why we design our shirt with the quote “I Eat Asbestos”. Actually, we get inspiration from a story that is causing a stir on social networks these days to put that quote on the tee. Get to know about the story and you will understand more.
The origin of the quote “I Eat Asbestos”
Our stunning shirt with the quote “I Eat Asbestos” is inspired by a story of a Plymouth mum not eating so her disabled son can eat after an asbestos housing crisis. This is also an incident that has caused a stir in public opinion in recent days. Let’s see how this story relates to social issues, fighting for justice.
The story of an asbestos housing crisis
Right now, be with us and discover the story that inspired us to make the beautiful I Eat Asbestos Shirt!
A Plymouth woman is reported to have been left without a permanent address for the last five weeks. During this time, she is waiting for her flat to be deemed safe after an asbestos roof collapsed in her disabled son’s room.
That woman is known to be Sam Beecham. She is currently a full-time carer for her 14-year-old son who is suffering from ADHD, autism, insecure attachment disorder, emotional delay, and severe anxiety. Sam Beecham shares that she has been fighting her housing company for the last two years because of the damage to her two-bedroom flat at Sutton Court, George Street in Devonport.
The flat is known to be owned by the Clarion Housing Association who rehomed Sam and her son at the end of June. At that time, Sam reported that the roof of her son’s room had started to “crumble”.
According to a spokesperson for Clarion, they are working hard to ensure that Sam can return as soon as possible. Additionally, they gave the woman and her son a £15 evening meal token. However, Sam insists that even when she had noticed Clarion about the damage in 2018, they supposedly didn’t fix it.
The same reputedly happened when the woman required them to repair her son’s windows. Sam revealed that her son’s windows were screwed shut last June. The reason was that they couldn’t repair them. They told her that they would like to replace the whole window to repair it properly but they didn’t do that.
Let’s have a closer look at all Sam and her son have to go through when they moved to different hotels in five weeks after the asbestos housing crisis.
At the end of June this year, Sam’s disabled son told her that his ceiling was starting to crumble. He also realized that all around the window, it started to come away and there’s asbestos in the ceiling. Sam, after that, called the innkeeper to find a solution.
After a phone call to Clarion at half-past five in the evening, the mother and her son were removed from their property right at midnight of that day. At that time, the matter became worse when the housing association asked her if he disabled son could sleep downstairs or not. Sam immediately refused. She said that because of her son’s need, she had to be on the same floor as him.
After a twenty-minute phone call, they told her that they were going to ‘escalate’ it and then get back to me. However, Sam had to make another phone call to them at half past 10 because no one had contacted her back.
Finally, Sam and his son were moved to a hotel room at midnight right that night. On the next day, someone came out and told them: “yeah it’s not safe we need to seal the room off and they need to remove the asbestos.”
During that hard time, Sam and her son have moved to three different hotels in the city. Sam revealed that Clarion only contacted her once when Sam was about to be made homeless. It was the time the hotel room registration expired even when the repair work for her flat hasn’t been started.
Sam shares the only reason she and her son didn’t have to sleep in her car. It was because Plymouth MP, Luke Pollard had tried to contact the housing company who said the hotel had made a ‘mistake.’
It was fortunate that the pair could check-in at the hotel again that evening. However, it’s sad that her disabled son hadn’t got any food or water for seven hours.
A spokesperson for Clarion assured Sam and her son that they would not have been left without accommodation. During her time living outside her flat, Sam revealed that she has been contacted by the workmen. They are those set to implement the repair work. However, according to these workmen, their work will not start until September 4.
The worker also let Sam know that the contents in her son’s bedroom will be removed. But sadly, Sam hasn’t been informed how she could be able to replace all those items.
The woman is currently complaining to Clarion about this. Sam argues with the owner of her flat when she knows that all the contents from her son’s bedroom such as bed, carpet, and everything are going to be removed.
Clarion is the one who paid for the cost of Sam’s stay at each of the hotels during the last five weeks. But Sam says that her rent was not suspended at the same time.
For their stay, Sam and her son have received a £15 evening meal token. According to this woman, it’s not enough, which left her going without breakfast and lunch just to make sure that her son can eat enough. The mother emphasized that she is still paying rent as well as paying for all the bills for a property that they haven’t been living in for up to five weeks.”
Sam and her son have suffered mentally and physically because of the stress when having to live away from home for such a long time. Especially, her son had to struggle mentally and physically when they stay in a hotel room, which mean they have to share the bedroom. While her son needs his own space, they only have one room.
The spokesperson confirmed that they have booked this hotel for Ms. Beecham and her son until August 31, but the date would be extended because the repair work for her flat has not yet complete. They assured that Beecham would not be left without accommodation under any circumstance.
I Eat Asbestos Shirt is inspired by the behavior of the innkeeper
There are different viewpoints about this story. And among many points of view, we pay more attention to the way the innkeeper behaves with Sam and her son. There are people who express that they can’t accept the innkeeper’s behaviors.
Clarion is said to be quite heartless when she treats Sam and her son like that. As we always want to seek justice and hope good things come to other people, we don’t agree with some actions of Clarion in this story.
And that’s also what motivates us to create this beautiful just thoughtful item – I Eat Asbestos Shirt. The sarcastic quote “I Eat Asbestos Shirt” is like a message we would want to share with many people – it’s important to learn how to treat others properly.
As you can see in the story, the innkeeper is not completely a bad person. She also does some practical things to help Sam and her son to deal with the problem. To be more specific, she pays for the hotel cost and provides a £15 evening meal allowance per person in Sam’s household.
But we also need to look into the way Clarion solved the problem. While Sam is having a hard time, there are times when the innkeeper seems to ignore her requests. During the time that Sam and his son had to stay out of the hotel, there was only one time when the innkeeper contacted to deal with the issue of the hotel room registration expire. In addition, she never called to ask how Sam and her son were. She pays very little attention to all Sam and her son are going through.
Moreover, it is completely unreasonable to charge Sam’s room during the 5 weeks she is not in the apartment. The asbestos housing crisis is said to have started 2 years ago and Sam has complained about it. So why does Sam have to pay for the accommodation and other expenses when she has to go out of the flat even within 5 weeks?
I Eat Asbestos Shirt is inspired by the sympathy for Sam and her son
The second inspiration for us to design the I Eat Asbestos T-Shirt is because of the sympathy for the plight of Sam Beecham and her son.
A woman raising an autistic son has to endure many hardships as she and her son have to leave their apartment to stay at different hotels. Even, there was a time when her son didn’t even have anything to eat for 7 hours.
In particular, about the fact that all the content in the boy’s room will be removed, many people feel very sympathetic to him. Do some people wonder where humanity is?
Money aside, that poor boy is going to lose everything, all his toys, clothes. A child never deserves that, especially he is a disabled child. Asbestos is all over his things bless him, his carpet, bed, duvet. We can’t imagine what he would feel and would do if he lost all his precious favorite loved things. Poor boy and we feel truly sorry for him!
It’s sympathy for the woman and her son that inspires us to make I Eat Asbestos Shirt. At hard times, people hope to receive help and sympathy from other people. And wearing I Eat Asbestos Shirt is a great way for you to express your empathetic feelings towards those who are facing difficulties in their daily life!
