2. It took 64 years to get Father’s Day recognized

It took a very long road – 64 years for Father’s Day to be declared a national holiday. President Calvin Coolidge supported a day to honor dad but did not make a proclamation. After that, President Woodrow Wilson expressed his point of view at a Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington, but later received resistance from Congress to make the holiday official. The reason for their refusal was because they supposed that the day could become commercialized. 

President Lyndon B. Johnson then became the one who declared Father’s Day to be the third Sunday in June. However, the day was not yet considered a permanent national holiday at that time. It was not until 1972 that President Nixon officially declared Father’s Day an official national holiday. It is clear that Father’s Day is much newer than Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day has first been celebrated since the 1860s and was declared to be official in 1914.
