The first theory regarding the celebration of Father’s Day on July 5, 1908, in a West Virginia church.  The 1907 Monogah Mining Disaster left a thousand children fatherless when an explosion accidentally killed 250 fathers and 367 men. Inspired by the US’ first Mother’s Day earlier that year, Clayton, a West Virginian woman whose father died several years before, encouraged her pastor – Reverend Robert Thomas Webb to give special service to the victims of Monogah. It was July 5, the closest Sunday to her father’s birthday. Therefore, the first Father’s Day was recognized in West Virginia.

Another influencing force that additional strengthened the establishment of Father’s Day was a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd in Spokane, Washington. After listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in the church in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day to honor and celebrate her dad—a widower and father of six. She thought that fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise like mothers.

Having raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother passed away, Sonora wanted her father to know how important he was to her and how much she loved and appreciated his sacrifice. Although she originally thought of celebrating Father’s Day on June 5 in Spokane (which was her father’s birthday), the others involved disagreed that they would have enough time for a proper celebration.

Then, Father’s Day was initiated by President Woodrow Wilson, who was the first U.S. President to celebrate it in June 1916, a party his family treated. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed it a national holiday in 1924.

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson, by official order, turned Father’s Day into a holiday celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The holiday was not formally reviewed until 1972 when it was officially acknowledged by a Congressional Act establishing it permanently on the third Sunday in June nationwide.
