‘A great day for America’: Biden greets relaxed CDC guidance for fully vaccinated Americans

Fully vaccinated Americans can ditch masks, no longer recommending masks indoors or outdoors, even in crowds, the CDC said at a White House briefing Thursday after months of mostly cautious measures.

US Covid-19 vaccinations and thing to know

The new guidelines announced by Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, represent an important step towards a return to normal for a devastated country battered and divided by a pandemic that has lasted more than a year.

“Anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities large or small without wearing a mask or physical distancing. If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic,” said Rochelle Walensky.

Walensky also said: “We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy. Based on the continuing downward trajectory of cases, the scientific data on the performance of our vaccines, and our understanding of how the virus spreads, that moment has come for those who are fully vaccinated.”

The CDC defines someone to be fully vaccinated two weeks after that person receives either one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or the second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines.

The new guidance stills give exceptions for crowded indoor settings such as buses, planes, hospitals, prisons, and homeless shelters but could reduce restrictions for reopening workplaces and schools. Besides, the agency will no longer suggest that fully vaccinated people wear face masks outdoors in crowds, which could allow for greater capacity at sporting events.

“Today is a great day for America in our long battle with coronavirus”

– Joe Biden

After the CDC’s announcement, President Joe Biden also made an announcement during an outdoor press conference several hours later. “Today is a great day for America in our long battle with coronavirus”, he said. “I think it’s a great milestone.”

“The CDC is saying, they have concluded, that fully vaccinated people are at very, very low risk of getting Covid-19. Therefore, if you’ve been fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask,” Biden said. “Let me repeat: if you are fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask.”

“The president said let’s just take them off, right here, in the meeting,” Blunt revealed to reporters.

US Covid 19 vaccinations you should know
In the U.S., 268 million doses of Covid-19 vaccinations have been given so far, according to Bloomberg.

According to Axios, on average, the number of Covid-19 new cases decreases dramatically. Specifically, there are fewer than 40,000 new Covid-19 new confirmed cases every day over the past week, a 21% improvement compared to the previous week.

The site also offers a graphic of a state-by-state coronavirus map. You can see that the rates of infection are steady and decreasing.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, said “Conditions have changed. We can and we must reopen schools in the fall for in-person teaching, learning, and support. And keep them open. Fully and safely, five days a week.”

U.S. coronavirus cases are at their lowest levels since September and Covid-19 deaths are at their lowest since April 2020, averaging around 600 daily. In more than half of US states, coronavirus deaths have decreased to the single digits. Some states even have had days without any coronavirus deaths.

The number of US Covid-19 deaths a day peaked in mid-January, with daily averages totaling more than 3,400.

Meanwhile, approximately 45% of US adults are fully vaccinated and nearly 59% of US adults have received at least one dose of vaccine, per CDC data.

The number of hospitalizations has fallen dramatically across the US. Experts believe the decline in deaths and hospitalizations is thanks to vaccination.

Dr. Amesh Adalja, of Johns Hopkins University, emphasized the important role of vaccinations in spite of challenges in reaching herd immunity in the US.

Adalja said that: “The primary objective is to deny this virus the ability to kill at the rate that it could, and that has been achieved,”. “We have, in effect, tamed the virus.”

According to Johns Hopkins data, there have been 32,819,878 confirmed US Covid-19 cases and 583,779 deaths.
