This Writers Guild Of America On Strike Shirt, as the name suggests, is the Writers Guild of America strike that took place on May 2, 2023. Unions representing 11,500 film and television screenwriters went on strike, bringing production to a halt. This is Hollywood’s first strike since 2007.
Why are the writers striking?
Every three years, the East and West branches of the Writers Guild of America represent thousands to negotiate a new contract with major Hollywood studios. The negotiations this time have long been predicted to be difficult.
Over the last decade, television output has increased fast as media giants have invested billions in streaming services. However, the writers have stated that their pay has remained stagnant. But the writers have said that their compensation has stalled. W.G.A. leaders have said that the current system has been broken, arguing that “the survival of writing as a profession is at stake in this negotiation.”
What are the writers’ complaints?
The authors have stated that the introduction of artificial intelligence obstacles is one of the most crucial topics for them in this dialogue. But the most crucial issue for them is compensation.
They claim that the streaming industry has harmed their working circumstances. Many streaming shows feature 8 to 12 episodes every season, but traditional television has more than 20 episodes.
Another key proposal the WGA is backing is to ensure each member of the writing team receives their own pension and healthcare fund. AMPTP rejected this proposal and made no counter-proposal. At the same time, there was a tentative agreement between the WGA and the AMPTP to have 0.5% of the negotiated minimum for all WGA minimums go into pensions and health funds.
What do the studios say?
The studios believe that now is not the time to make big changes in how authors are compensated.
The advertising market is bleak, and cable and broadcast networks that have been extremely profitable for decades are losing viewers. Since Netflix lost subscribers for the first time in a decade last year, Wall Street has turned against media businesses. This has compelled studio executives to find a method to turn their loss-making streaming services into profitable businesses as soon as possible.
Fallout is substantial. Disney is laying off 7,000 workers. Last year, Warner Bros. Discovery eliminated thousands of staff and shelved games due to massive debt. Many other studios are taking similar efforts to save money.
