It is a humorous way to commemorate the synchronized emergence of two different broods of periodical cicadas, known as Brood XIII and Brood XIX, which are expected to appear in the summer of 2024.
Periodical cicadas are insects that emerge in large numbers once every 13 or 17 years, depending on the brood. They spend most of their lives underground as nymphs before emerging for a brief period to mate and lay eggs.
Brood XIII and Brood XIX are two specific broods of periodical cicadas. Brood XIII has a 17-year cycle, while Brood XIX follows a 13-year cycle. The double emergence of Broods XIX and XIII is rare, occurring every 221 years (when 13-instar and 17-instar cicadas overlap, because 13 times 17 is 221). These two cicada colonies have not been on the ground at the same time since 1803, and after this year’s event, they won’t be reunited until 2245. Their synchronized emergence is a rare event, hence it is called the “reunion tour”.
