UCLA trolls LSU’s Ed Orgeron over ‘Sissy Blue’ shirt
These days, a video of LSU head coach Ed Orgeron responding to a heckling UCLA fan by calling the Bruins’ blue a “sissy” color has spread like wildfire on Twitter. Before the game, Orgeron had some words for a heckler from UCLA while he was walking into the stadium on Saturday.
“Hey! Hey! Bring your ass on …,” Orgeron said to the fan. “Bring your ass on in your sissy blue shirt!”
As the game drew to a close, UCLA impressively controlled both scenario lines and won 38-27 in front of a passionate crowd. Still basking in the glory of that victory, whoever runs the UCLA Football Twitter account had to win a spot at Orgeron by changing the account’s header image.
Well, UCLA football may have had a marketing opportunity. The team’s social account tweeted an announcement early Monday morning that read “header peek,” a reference asking people to see the Twitter account’s header image. The header is an image of a light blue shirt featuring the words “Sissy Blue” across the chest, with the U in the same font as the official UCLA logo.
This isn’t the first time the Bruins have trolled Orgeron and LSU. The team’s football Twitter account also made a video that initially shows the Orgeron incident with fans and later has images of UCLA players in celebration dancing in the locker room after the victory.
UCLA fan explains interaction with Ed Orgeron
The hilarious thing about the whole interaction is that the shirt the UCLA fan was wearing wasn’t blue at all.
Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch followed the fan, who explained how it all went down. The fan, David Witzling, said in fact, he wore a “black team-issued Jordan shirt” with only a small blue UCLA logo and his children were the ones wearing blue UCLA shirts.
The Witzling family provided the Times with a video showing the entire exchange, which was started by Witzling reminding Orgeron of his comments before his final game as USC’s interim coach in 2013 when he said that week during the rally leading up to the UCLA game: “Come Saturday Night, we’ll let boys from all over town into our stadium and we’ll lock the gate.”
Two days after UCLA beat USC, Orgeron discovered he would not be appointed full-time head coach of Trojan. Instead, USC hired Steve Sarkisian and Orgeron resigned.
After a one-season absence, Orgeron joined LSU as a defensive line coach and then as interim head coach after Les Miles was fired. This time, Orgeron got a full-time job. He made the most of it, taking LSU to the national title in 2019. Since then, however, the Tigers have only ranked 5-6th overall.
If he doesn’t get things back on track soon, the questions about his job status will start to surface more than they already are.
Witzling told the Times that he teased Orgeron about what he said in 2013 when Orgeron went toward the Rose Bowl tunnel. Initially, Orgeron just gave Witzling a thumbs up when Witzling asked him how he was doing, but then Witzling told Orgeron that “We’ll lock those gates, and we’ll defeat you. Remember SC?”
That’s when Orgeron made his “sissy blue shirt” comments.
Witzling said his daughter, Natalie, asked, “Did he say that? Was he really, like, upset?”
“Of course,” replied Witzling with a smile.
LSU, going back to last season, has now lost six of its past 11 games and has given up 34 or more points in its past four games after going undefeated in 2019 and winning the national championship.
