“Amor Prohibido“, which means Forbidden Love in English, is the title song of Selena’s fourth studio album of the same name (1994). This is a Tejano cumbia album modernized with a synthesizer-rich delivery using a minimalist style that was quintessential in the early 1990s Tejano music.

The tragic life story of Selena Quintanilla, the Queen of Tejano music 

The singer’s talent was discovered by Rick Trevi, founder of the Tejano Music Awards after a long time Selena aired the Johnny Canales Show radio show.

In addition to her reputation for talent, Selena is also famous for her romantic but troubled love. In 1992, Selena married guitarist, Chris Pérez.

The relationship between Selena and Chris was urgently opposed by Mr. Abraham, Selena’s father. He was concerned that Chris would adversely affect his daughter. Their love affair took place in silence for a long time.

Selena and Chris decided to get married in 1992, before announcing it to everyone. Mr. Abraham was shocked but later accepted when the couple apologized and most importantly, the father realized that his daughter was very happy.

In 1994, this talented singer also entered the fashion field. Selena started her own fashion line and opened two boutiques called Selena Etc. More stores have been opened in the US, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

However, Selena is a superstar with poor fate. In 1995, Latin music lost a legend. Music fans around the world were shocked to learn that Selena died on March 31, 1995.  That day Selena was only 2 weeks away from her 23rd birthday. Ironically, Selena was killed by her longtime friend, Yolanda Saldivar. Yolanda is the president of Selena’s fan club and also the manager of the fashion chain Selena Etc.

The brilliant years of Selena’s life have touched the hearts of Hollywood filmmakers. In 1997, a film about her life and career was made by Warner Bros. Beautiful actress Jennifer Lopez was honored to play Selena.

It has been 26 years since Selena died, but her music is still popular until now. Especially, the Quintanilla Family in her hometown of Corpus Cristi, Texas also organized a two-day festival each year called Fiesta de la Flor in Selena’s honor from 2015 to 2020.

Her legacy forever lives in fan memorials, family tributes, the blockbuster Jennifer Lopez portrayal in Selena, and most recently Netflix’s take on “the Queen of Tejano music,” Selena: The Series.

Murder of Selena: Why Did Yolanda Saldívar Kill Selena Quintanilla

The shocking news was that former fan club president Yolanda Saldívar shot Selena. At the time. Yolanda had recently been relieved of her duties as president of Selena’s fan club and manager of her boutiques. 

Selena and her father Abraham suspected that Saldívar had embezzled money after fans called and sent letters to the Quintanilla family to express that they hadn’t got merchandise they had ordered and paid for. 

Abraham also found that Yolanda had taken more than $60,000 from Selena’s fan club and stores. Even after being fired, Yolanda still had some paperwork for the stores.

Until March 30, 1995, when it was known for sure what Saldivar had done, Selena made a decision to fire her. Unfortunately, it’s Selena’s trust and great kindness that helped the evil woman.

On the morning of March 31, 1995, Selena set up a meeting at the Days Inn Motel in Corpus Christi, TX, to confront her and collect documents. 

However, Saldivar lied to Selena that she had been raped and needed help. She asked Selena to go to a motel alone so she could take her to the doctor. At the hospital, the doctor concluded that there was no sign that Saldivar was raped and that she showed signs of depression.

Back to the motel where Saldívar is staying, she pulled out a “cowboy gun” and aimed it at Selena. The singer tried to run away, but Saldívar shot her once in the back. Selena escaped and reached the hallway before collapsing. The singer was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

Sadly, Selena died before her husband was able to see her since the wound was too severe and she lost a lot of blood. Saldivar’s trial is considered the trial of the century. For her first-degree murder, this woman received a life sentence. The killer is now serving her life sentence in a women’s prison in Texas.

Waves of anger and grief quickly spread from fans, artists to politicians. Former US President Bush, then Governor of Texas, shared that Selena was a representative of southern Texas culture.
