World Peace Summit II At Sofitel Legend Metropole, Hanoi, Vietnam
On February 27 and 28, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met for two days in Hanoi, Vietnam, in the most opulent hotel, the Sofitel Legend Metropole. Leaders addressed the possibility of a nuclear agreement with North Korea.
This is Trump and Kim’s second meeting; they originally met in Singapore last June, but have made little headway in negotiating a nuclear-free North Korea since then.
Trump’s meeting with Kim in 2018 marked a significant departure in US diplomatic strategy, as he decided to sit face-to-face with Kim to begin nuclear discussions, rather than face-to-face with the North Korean leader. Set aside a high-level meeting to wrap up the negotiating process after a deal is reached.
The focus of the Vietnam Summit will be on the two nations’ tentative agreement. Mr Kim promised to shut down a key nuclear plant in exchange for certain economic penalties from America, and he signed a peace proclamation to symbolically end the Korean War.
Reaching an agreement on these criteria can greatly improve the relationship between the two nations and is one of the primary milestones that will signal a big turning point in US-North Korean cooperation.
