The shirt was intended as a taunt toward LSU’s SEC rival, the Texas A&M Aggies, who were scheduled to play LSU in Baton Rouge on September 26. The bar’s owner described the shirt as a “lighthearted jab” at the rival team.

The phrase containing the F-slur was the controversial part. According to reporting, the shirt’s layout was arranged so that the wording around “F” and “Aggies” appeared to form a homophobic slur. Murphy’s owner said that this was not intended to reference anything controversial and attributed it to the design/layout not being thought through carefully enough.
