Because Gómez and her family do not like to leave him alone, Merlin regularly accompanies them to their cart at well-known tourist areas like Alameda Central and the Palace of Fine Arts.

During the World Cup, Merlin’s family dressed him up in a miniature, custom-made Mexico national team (El Tri) jersey, complete with matching tiny duck socks.

Videos of him waddling proudly through jubilant, thousands-strong street celebrations, such as after Mexico’s 2-0 opening victory against South Africa, took off across social media platforms like TikTok, X, and Instagram.

While Mexico’s official World Cup mascot is Zayu the Jaguar, fans quickly crowned Merlin the “unofficial mascot” of the country, calling him a national treasure and a lucky charm for the host nation.
