Malcolm Butler is a former NFL cornerback, best known for this one play that literally changed the outcome of a Super Bowl. It happened on February 1, 2015, during Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.

With the Seahawks just 1 yard from the end zone and the game on the line, quarterback Russell Wilson threw a short pass instead of running the ball — and Butler jumped the route and intercepted it at the goal line with under 30 seconds left in the game. That play sealed the Patriots’ 28-24 victory and prevented the Seahawks from winning back-to-back Super Bowls.

Because of that moment, it’s considered one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history. The interception turned Butler — an undrafted rookie at the time — into an overnight football legend. Fans still talk about it every year, especially when the Seahawks and Patriots get mentioned together, and the interception is replayed constantly in NFL throwbacks and discussions of legendary moments.
