They got creative this week at the state boys’ hockey tournament to show their support. The Mahtomedi student section showed up for the quarterfinal matchup wearing shirts with the words “FREE GUNNAR” prominently on the front. A drawing also captures the iconic moment when Sather jumped the glass.
After Mahtomedi won last year’s Class A title in double overtime against Warroad, much ado was made of basically nothing when an enthusiastic, gold-helmeted student scaled the Xcel Energy Center glass to join the Zephyrs’ on-ice celebration.
On Wednesday, the Zephyrs student section showed up for their quarterfinal against Orono wearing white shirts emblazoned with “FREE GUNNAR” across the front to show their support for their — banned from the arena — fellow student.
“Gunnar was like the biggest fan ever, and now he can’t come to any of our games,” goalie Charlie Brandt said. “They’re showing support for him and I think it’s great. They should let him come to the next one.”
“Gunnar is a great young man. Unfortunately, he has the label he does, because he’s a real character young man,” coach Jeff Poeschl added.

Shipping and expedited manufacturing ($14.95+) (U.S. Only)
- Orders using this option jump to the front of the manufacturing queue which can generally save a couple days (or more during busier times of the year).
- It's highly recommended to use this option if you are ordering for a specific event or holiday.
- Orders using this option generally arrive 2-3 days after being manufactured and shipped. (U.S. only)
