The aquarium announced on social media that the whale, who is also known as Toki, had been showing signs of distress from what the aquarium’s medical staff supposed was a renal disease. Lolita, at 57, was one of the killer whales living in captivity. Animal rights activists fought for her freedom from five decades of captivity.

Lolita is expected to be returned to her native waters in the Pacific Northwest on March 30, 2023, and spend the remainder of her life in a semi-wild sea pen in the Salish Sea. However, on August 18, 2023, Miami Seaquarium announced that Lolita had died from renal failure in a social media post.

Lolita and many other whales were taken after a violent capture from a pod in Puget Sound near Seattle in 1970. During the capture, four baby whales and one adult were killed.
