What caused the devastating wildfires in Hawaii?
The long drought caused the trees and everything on the island of Maui to dry out, along with low humidity and high winds, creating conditions for wildfires in Maui.
Meanwhile, Hawaii governor Josh Green agreed with wildfire experts that global warming combined with the drought in Maui and the high winds from Hurricane Dora south of Hawaii is the main cause of fire outbreaks.
According to the NWS, despite Hurricane Dora making landfall in the southern region of Hawaii, the contrast between the low pressure in the storm area and the high pressure in the northern region of Hawaii has generated strong winds. Coupled with prolonged dry weather, this has exacerbated the severity of wildfires.
Why did Lahaina suffer the most severe damage?
In particular, the reason why the historic town of Lahaina was the most devastated by the fire is that it is located on the drier, less rainy, and windy side of Maui County.
Furthermore, as the wildfires spread further into the central part of the town of Lahaina, additional issues have arisen. Water supply pipes are running dry due to the town’s water distribution system collapsing, and the alarm system in Lahaina has also been damaged.
A series of roads in Lahaina were blocked, broken power lines were scattered on the road, making many vehicles unable to move, and many people died in their own cars.
