Sadly, Atkins passed away on October 31, 2026, at the age of 64. His death was confirmed by his management company on November 1, 2026, after he was found unresponsive in a hotel room in Mexico City ahead of a scheduled performance. His passing represents a significant loss for the electronic music community and fans around the world.

Juan Atkins first gained recognition in the early 1980s through Cybotron, an electronic music duo he formed with Richard Davis. Their influential tracks, particularly “Clear,” helped establish the futuristic sound that would become known as Detroit techno. Atkins later released music under the name Model 500 and founded Metroplex Records in 1985, helping introduce Detroit’s underground electronic music to international audiences.

Alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, Atkins became part of the influential group known as the Belleville Three. The trio played a crucial role in developing Detroit techno, combining synthesizers, drum machines, funk influences, and futuristic sounds. Their innovations helped transform Detroit into the birthplace of a musical genre that eventually spread throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Atkins is also credited with helping popularize the term “techno” itself.
