Iowa Hawkeyes 0:02 No Extra Time Necessary Shirt Meaning
On September 26, the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Michigan Wolverines 20–19 at Michigan Stadium. Iowa was trailing 19–14 and had possession with only 1:46 remaining. The Hawkeyes drove 91 yards in 11 plays, eventually reaching the Michigan 16-yard line. With exactly 0:02 left, quarterback Hank Brown threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Reece Vander Zee, giving Iowa the victory on the final play.
Therefore, “0:02” on the shirt represents the two seconds that remained when Iowa made the game-winning play. The number has become a shorthand for the spectacular ending.
The phrase “No Extra Time Necessary” has an additional meaning. Immediately after the victory, Iowa’s official football social-media account posted “NO EXTRA TIME NECESSARY.” This was a reference to an earlier controversial Michigan game against Western Michigan, when Michigan was given an additional second on the clock and subsequently had another opportunity to attempt a game-winning Hail Mary. An NCAA review later found mistakes in the officiating process.
So Iowa’s message was essentially a rivalry joke aimed at Michigan: Michigan had previously needed an additional second to get its last-second opportunity, whereas Iowa beat Michigan with the time that was already on the clock—no extra time was necessary.
