In 2014, a spin-off film featuring the penguins, named Penguins of Madagascar, was released. A fourth film, Madagascar 4, was originally announced to be released in 2018. But the film has later been removed from its schedule because of the studio’s restructuring.

In a flashback in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, a hint points out that Melman had a crush on Gloria as a child (because he looks quite uncomfortable when she says that Alex is cute). He takes the position of Witch Doctor to cure sick animals, introduce them to Western medicine, which helps give them longer and better lives.

While he seems to be very good at this job, another giraffe informs him that Melman has a brown spot on his shoulder, one which the previous Witch Doctor may have got and “was gone” just two days later. Melman is so scared to know that once a giraffe becomes sick, it has no way to survive. The only thing it can do is simply wait in a hole to die. 

With a thought in mind that he only has two days to live, Melman initially waits in a hole. Then he decides to take King Julien’s advice and goes to express his love to Gloria. He looks for her on a date and lets her know what a wonderful girl Gloria is. When the watering hole dries up and King Julien wants to sacrifice an animal for the water gods, it’s Melman who offers himself to sacrifice. At the last moment, he is saved when Gloria admits that she also loves him and they become a couple. Now it is apparent that the “brown spot” was not fatal.

Melman in the film is a very good guy who is loyal to his friends, but he is considered somewhat of a hypochondriac, having doses of medicine for meals and doctor’s appointments frequently. He even complains about having brown spots on his neck though in real life, these spots are regarded as something so natural.

While it is clear that he’s loved Gloria since childhood, this character has always felt too nervous to tell her. He is afraid that it would ruin their friendship and it probably wouldn’t work out. Luckily, in Africa, Melman turns to be less neurotic because he has finally won Gloria’s love. The time when Melman is in a great relationship with Gloria is truly the time he enjoys his life!

Melman appears with different characteristics. While the giraffe is considered to be neurotic, worrisome, and shy, he is also said to be kind, funny, frolicsome, loving, brave, caring. However, it’s his stupid features that are a great inspiration for us to make this shirt.
