Steinem died on September 2, 2026, at age 92, and was widely remembered as a journalist, author, activist, and a major advocate for women’s equality and reproductive rights. She co-founded Ms. magazine and helped establish organizations including the National Women’s Political Caucus.
The front of the shirt features a portrait of Steinem with her name and the dates “1934–2026,” making the design clearly a tribute or memorial shirt. Her distinctive long hair and large glasses are especially recognizable parts of her public image.
The large message on the back reads “THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE, BUT FIRST IT WILL PISS YOU OFF.” This is one of the sayings most closely associated with Steinem. She used versions of the expression publicly by the late 1990s, although research into the phrase’s history indicates that it was already circulating before Steinem became associated with it. The first part echoes the well-known biblical statement in John 8:32, “the truth will set you free.” Steinem’s addition of the blunt phrase “but first it will piss you off” transforms the traditional idea into a humorous and confrontational feminist slogan.
