That timing became the central source of resentment. Ole Miss had gone 11–1 during the 2025 regular season, and Kiffin’s departure happened immediately before the team’s playoff run. Ole Miss subsequently finished the season No. 3 in the final AP poll.

The shirt’s popularity is closely connected to Kiffin’s return to Oxford on September 19, 2026, when his LSU Tigers visited Ole Miss. The buildup was unusually intense.
