M18A1 Claymore: World’s most well-known mine?
Who invented the Claymore mine?
It cannot be denied that the Claymore is the most famous mine of the latter half of the 20th century. Making a name for itself during the Vietnam War, it was used effectively by the United States military to repel attacks and initiate ambushes. Over the years, allies and enemies paid attention to it, and it has made many copies while remaining a highly effective tool for literally destroying the opposition.
So who invented Claymore? Before World War II, József Misznay, a Hungarian army officer and ballistics expert, and German physicist Hubert Schardin discovered that an explosive block with a heavy backing platform, such as a steel plate, could direct most of the impulse forward and be less dangerous to those in the back.
Then they named this invention after themselves, the Misznay-Schardin effect, and spent the rest of the war perfecting the theory by crafting a variety of mines, including anti-tank and trench versions, and the effect was proven. However, none of the mines were used by the end of World War II, so theoretical testing was suspended.
Then all the information about the Misznay-Schardin effect came to be held by Americans. Explosives researcher Norman A. MacLeod used it to create a weapon against human wave attacks, such as the attacks by Chinese soldiers against the Americans during the Korean War. He named his antipersonnel mine the claymore, after the two-handed sword used by his Scottish ancestors. The device weighs 5 pounds and fires 700 steel cubes 40 feet.
The US military desired something lighter, more effective, and stronger. So, researchers at Aerojet Corp. cooperated on a weapon that can fire steel balls at an efficient range of 55 yards. In 1956, the military adopted the claymore and factories produced 80,000 a month during the Vietnam War. American soldiers first used them to destroy effects against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese human-wave assaults.
What is in a claymore mine?
Unlike conventional land mines, which direct their explosive upward, the Claymore is called a “directional mine.” This means that the user will point the mine in one direction by using a crude sight on top and then steadies it with scissor-shaped legs that can either stick down or stand firmly on the ground. A wire connected to the mine will be pulled to a safe distance to the user’s position and at the other end of the line is a detonator in the form of a clamp, which when squeezed will detonate the mine.
Due to its curved rectangular shape, when the Claymore is fired, the plastic explosive throws 700 steel balls out in a 60° radius. Anything exposed within a 50-yard distance can become a casualty. The closer you are, the greater the chance of casualties. The mine is like dozens of shotguns exploding at once.
The Claymore mine has a convex green plastic case that features the words “FRONT TOWARD ENEMY” embossed on the front of the mine, warning the user to aim the mine at the required target. This ensured almost no mistakes in use and the mine worked as its name suggests (which is the name of the Scottish Claymore sword).
