What Do You Know About “Juneteenth Freeish Since 1865”?
On this day in 1865 – the day later known as Juneteenth – Union soldiers arrive in Galveston, Texas, and announce that the American Civil War is over and slavery in America has been abolished. A combination of June and the 19th, Juneteenth has come to celebrate the end of slavery in America.
Although President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was promulgated more than two years ago on January 1, 1863, the Confederacy’s absence of a military presence in Texas made it difficult to enforce. Some historians attribute the delay in enforcement too weak communications at the time, while others believe that Texas slave owners deliberately withheld the information.
Upon arriving in Texas with Confederate soldiers, Major General Gordon Granger proclaimed: “The people of Texans are informed that, as declared by the Executive of the United States, all slaves have been set free”
That day, 250,000 slaves were freed, and despite the message asking them to stay home and work for their masters, many of the former slaves immediately left Texas and headed north or to other states to find people whose homes they’ve been separated from.
On June 17, US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris jointly signed a law to designate June 19 as a federal holiday, to commemorate the liberation of black Americans who were enslaved in the past. Juneteenth has become a federal holiday, commemorating the end of slavery in America. It is the 11th federally recognized holiday and the first approved federal holiday in nearly four decades in the United States!Â
