The First WKRP Turkey Drop With Les Nessman Cincinnati OH Shirt is a nostalgic tribute to the classic American sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati and its legendary Thanksgiving episode, “Turkeys Away,” which originally aired on October 30, 1978.
First WKRP Turkey Drop With Les Nessman Cincinnati OH Shirt Meaning
The show follows the humorous misadventures of employees at a fictional radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. The shirt references one of the most memorable moments in television sitcom history, featuring news reporter Les Nessman, played by actor Richard Sanders.
In the famous episode, the radio station’s manager, Arthur “Big Guy” Carlson, comes up with what he believes will be a brilliant Thanksgiving promotional idea: dropping live turkeys from a helicopter over a shopping mall parking lot to give them away to the public. Unfortunately, the plan turns into a complete disaster because turkeys cannot fly. Les Nessman reports the unfolding catastrophe live from the scene, delivering an exaggerated, dramatic commentary that includes the unforgettable phrase “Oh, the humanity!” At the end of the episode, Carlson returns to the station covered in feathers and famously declares, “As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!”
The phrase “First WKRP Turkey Drop” on the shirt suggests a commemorative design celebrating the original fictional turkey-drop event and its connection to Cincinnati. Les Nessman is prominently referenced because his hilarious live reporting is a major reason the episode became so iconic. The addition of “Cincinnati OH” reinforces the show’s setting and pays homage to the city that became closely associated with this unforgettable television moment.
There is also some interesting current news behind this design. On November 2, 2026, local media reported that the real WKRP-FM radio station in Cincinnati is bringing the famous turkey drop back to life on November 25, 2026. Instead of dropping live turkeys, organizers will release miniature rubber turkeys from a fire truck ladder in Hamilton, Ohio. The event will celebrate the sitcom’s legacy, with proceeds from merchandise and turkey sales benefiting Butler County’s Open Door Food Pantry.
Overall, this First WKRP Turkey Drop With Les Nessman Cincinnati OH Shirt celebrates the enduring popularity of WKRP in Cincinnati and its legendary “Turkeys Away” episode.
