ACAB (All Cops Are Bastards)is an acronym used as a political slogan associated with dissidents who are opposed to the police. It is typically written as a catchphrase in graffiti, tattoos, or other imagery in public spaces. It is sometimes numerically rendered as “1312”, representing the ordering of the letters in the English alphabet.
The statement is used by both racist and anti-racist skinheads, according to the Anti-Defamation League, who classify it as a hate sign in some settings and call it “a slogan of long standing in the skinhead community”
According to the National Center for Transgender Equality, transgender people are seven times more likely than cisgender people to be violent when interacting with the police, according to the New York City Anti-Violence Project, and nearly three out of every four deadly anti-LGBT hate crimes in the United States were committed against trans women and girls.
On June 1st, a community safety alert account @defendpdx tweeted a user-submitted photo of graffiti on the sidewalk in Portland after protests following the death of George Floyd. In the center of the photo, spray-painted in big white letters was the phrase “BOTTOMS, TOPS / WE ALL H8 COPS.”
In a year when Black Lives Matter rallies are the main topic of discussion, the shout “Bottoms, tops, we all hate cops” has emerged as the unofficial slogan of Pride month. Short tops and tall bottoms can unite in favor of removing the police.
Although the phrase is intended to be humorous, it serves a true function. Queer people, particularly Black and trans people, are disproportionately victims of violence – particularly police violence in the past.
