The Nike shirts featured the name of “Walton” on the front in a colorful tie-dye style font in honor of his great love for the Grateful Dead.
National Basketball honored the late Bill Walton ahead of Game 1 of the Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks, set to be played at TD Garden. League commissioner Adam Silver announced that players would wear these commemorative Walton shirts while warming up.
“The Celtics team was looking for a way to honor him tonight and in addition to a pregame moment, the players are going to be wearing a special Bill Walton shooting shirt,” Silver said to reporters. Boston then held a minute of silence for the legend and displayed a tribute video before Game 1 started.
Bill Walton, a basketball Hall of Famer and television sportscaster, died at his home in San Diego, on May 27, 2024, at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer. Since then, many in the basketball world at the college and professional levels have come with multiple ways to honor him.
