The word “Ahegao” itself is a compound of two Japanese words: “Aheahe“, which means “panting” or “moaning,” and “Gao“, which means “face.” So, Ahegao essentially means “moaning face.”
The Origin of the Ahegao Hoodie
The image of numerous anime characters with these explicit expressions, initially created by hentai artist Hirune, began circulating the internet in 2015. The earliest known picture of a t-shirt with this design surfaced on a South Korean forum on March 16, 2016, alongside images of phone cases, pillows, and bags bearing the same design.
This design gradually infiltrated Western fashion. In May 2017, another Reddit user posted a now-deleted photo of someone wearing an Ahegao shirt, marking the birth of the iconic design. Redditors identified the central face as an image from the hentai “Danke Dankei Revolution” by Japanese artist Asanagi.
Since then, the Reddit community has seen numerous photos of people wearing Ahegao Hoodie hoodies and t-shirts featuring this design, sometimes even to school.
Opinions have been divided, with some suggesting that it could provoke extremely negative reactions in public, while others view it as an unapologetic display of love for anime and Japanese culture. Regardless, Ahegao Hoodie has gained notoriety, sometimes associated with fetish culture.

Shipping and expedited manufacturing ($14.95+) (U.S. Only)
- Orders using this option jump to the front of the manufacturing queue which can generally save a couple days (or more during busier times of the year).
- It's highly recommended to use this option if you are ordering for a specific event or holiday.
- Orders using this option generally arrive 2-3 days after being manufactured and shipped. (U.S. only)
- Orders using expedited manufacturing will be printed when the next batch of orders are processed which can vary depending on seasonality and other factors.
