History of Father’s Day – How Did It Begin?

The history of Father’s Day is very important as we honor fatherhood and father’s influence on society. The origins go back to 1909 & 1910 when significant events happened to shape the meaning of Father’s Day.

Father’s Day was not immediately accepted when it was proposed, and it did not become a national holiday in the US until 1972 under President Richard Nixon’s administration. Why is it such a heated debate? Read the History of Father’s Day in this post.

A Brief History of Father’s Day

Father’s Day Controversy

As you may not know, Father’s Day was not immediately accepted when it was proposed. But why?

Mother’s Day came first (officially recognized in 1914) so men in the early 1900s linked it to women and found it too effeminate to their liking. To be fair, Mother’s Day is considered feminine.

Men considered it to be similar to Mother’s Day, the day favored by florists, fathers didn’t have the same emotional appeal. The purpose, they thought, was to create this day as a gimmick to sell more products.

However, that sentiment has changed over time for a number of reasons.

The origin of father’s day

Father’s Day was first celebrated on July 5, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia by Grace Golden Clayton. Clayton was the one who wanted to celebrate this day with the aim of commemorating the lives of the 210 men (married) who died in the worst mining accident in US history.

Two years later, the second father’s day was celebrated by Sonora Smart Dodd on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington, USA. This was the celebration that she wanted to give to her father to show her gratitude for the hard work of dad who silently nurtured 6 children alone after her mother passed away.

History of Father’s Day – Becoming a National Holiday

Father’s Day founding intention was brought to Congress in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, but he was not approved by Congress for fear it would be commercialized.

In 1924, US President Calvin Coolidge proposed to include this Father’s Day as an observed date, but it has not been announced in many countries around the world.

In 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a petition accusing Congress of ignoring Father’s Day for 50 years, while honoring only mothers.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential announcement honoring fathers, and designated the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

Six years later, the day was officially recognized as a national holiday just when President Richard Nixon made it into law in 1972.

And since then, Father’s Day has been officially known in 1972 in the US and many other countries around the world.

Commercialism and The Economy

Here’re some other economic reasons pushed Father’s Day forward:

  • The Great Depression happened. The economy needed help because everyone is tightening their penny. Father’s Day was employed by the struggling shops as an excuse to buy fathers some of the clothing and material goods they need. That’s a reason to buy dad a tie or socks, things he might not buy for himself.
  • Partly, World War II happened. The men were on the front lines. The desire to support the US military and the war effort provided another reason to support and show appreciation for fathers.

The Changing Role Of Fathers

The idea of fatherhood has also changed. It’s not the “feminine model” with flowers, but a day of celebrating what the dad loves to do, whether it’s fishing, flying or go-carting. It focuses on the greater role fathers play toward their children.

Another reason is, this change is due to the way society has also developed. The modern role of dad has changed so that the father and mother become partners, each with more responsibility in family life.

The value of fatherhood is very important, as we know from many studies what happens in the absence of a father. In a sense, Father’s Day can play a role in emphasizing the importance and value of fatherhood and the gifts that a father in family gives to his children.
