Which Christmas song was actually written for Thanksgiving Day?

Both kids and adults around the world fall in love with this famous song. A lot of them know the lyrics of the song by heart (or at least the first verse). However, very few people know the fact this popular Christmas-time tune was actually composed in the early 1850s as a Thanksgiving song. Let’s do some deep digging to know more!

Here’s How ‘Jingle Bells’ Was Originally Written for Thanksgiving

the composer of Jingle Bells

James Lord Pierpont was the man behind these popular tunes. He got the inspiration to write the song after watching sleigh races in Medford, Mass in the early 1850s. James Lord Pierpont then composed and published the song in 1857 under the name “One Horse Open Sleigh”. At that time, the song was for his father’s Sunday school class’ Thanksgiving performance.

Until now, no historian is sure about the time and place he wrote the song. Some suppose that he may have written it right in that Medford tavern or it could have been a few years later after the composer came to Savannah, Georgia, and became nostalgic for snowy Massachusetts winters. Because it was not until 1857 that the song was published so we can hardly find any concrete evidence of the exact time when it was written.

People raise some questions related to the place where the composer wrote the song. And it is considered that both Massachusetts and Georgia are plausible. Especially, Medford, Mass., where there were sleigh races in the 1800s, claims itself as the birthplace of the song. You can look at a plaque at 19 High Street, the site of the former Simpson Tavern, where Pierpont was supposed to have penned the ditty in 1850.

The rhythm of the tune mimics the sound of a trotting horse’s bells. During the time when there were no automobiles in New England, it was common for people to adorn horses’ harnesses with straps bearing bells. This would be an effective way to avoid collisions at blind intersections because a horse-drawn sleigh in snow makes almost no noise.

Just take a closer look at the lyrics of the song, you will realize that there is no specific mention of Christmas. In fact, the only references to snow are the only association with the holiday. So, what made these tunes become a very popular song for Christmas?

Well, Pierpont’s piece was considered a wonderful piece at the Thanksgiving performance. That’s why his father’s class performed it again at Christmastime. The song was published a second time two years later in 1859, under another more familiar title ‘Jingle Bells’.
