What are the events and activities of Veterans Day? Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day honors all veterans, servicemen, soldiers – both living and dead – who have served their country honorably in war or in peace. So how do you plan to celebrate Veterans Day this year?

  • Visit the Veterans Hospital: If you don’t have a local VA office, contact your nearby assisted living facility or nursing home. Talking to elderly or injured veterans is a great way to make them happy and proud of what they’ve done. Also you can hear some interesting stories as well as experiences about their time serving.
  • Invite a veteran: Be it a grandparent, parent, or faculty member – talk to students about what it’s like to be in the military. Don’t know if there are any veterans to invite? Contact your local VA. Their public affairs officer may be able to identify a good speaker. There are many veterans who work at VA facilities and are happy to talk to students.
  • Celebrate with service: Show gratitude to service members throughout the year with a hearty meal at home, a thank you note, or volunteering.
  • Express your thanks: Whenever you see someone wearing a uniform, say a simple thank you or a small act of kindness to express your thanks and appreciation for them.
  • Send a card or a small gift: Make a list of the names and addresses of Veterans you know and send them a small gift or a thank you card this year. Continue to build your list and create a tradition of sending these out every year.
