Despite the ban from Facebook, Trump’s fundraising arm is once again advertising on the platform
The 45th President Donald Trump has recently found a way to raise money and send his message out on Facebook, in spite of being banned from using the platform.
The move shows the difficulty in stopping Trump from interacting and benefiting from Facebook while showing that this social media giant is a significant tool for the former President to remain politically relevant.
According to Facebook’s ad library, a public collection of ads distributed on the platform, Save America Joint Fundraising Committee, a joint venture between Trump’s Save America leadership PAC and his Make America Great Again PAC, has launched a $3,506 Facebook ad campaign on the platform last week to appeal for donations and promote his upcoming rally in Oho.
Trump’s fundraising arm has put the ads using its own Facebook page, @OfficialTeamTrump, which is not constrained to the ban put on Trump’s individual page on the platform due to his posts that encouraged his supporters to riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Facebook declared earlier this month that the former President will not be permitted to use Facebook or Instagram for at least two years, valid from the date of his initial suspension on Jan. 7 of this year, the highest punishment likely under its new content moderation rules.
Another ad by Trump’s fundraising arm, aiming at President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, asks Trump fans to donate to “STOP SLEEPY JOE.”
“After just a few months in office, it’s clear that Biden is nothing more than a washed-up, career politician who has no clue what he is doing. There is a CRISIS at our border, gas prices have SKYROCKETED, and America is in DECLINE! Please donate now to show President Trump what you REALLY think about Joe Biden,” reads the ad.
Trump has begun the Save America PAC soon since the November 2020 election, and the political action committee can get an unlimited amount of money, more than $30 million until now, with the hope of raising more through Facebook ads.
The ads link to Trump’s Save America fundraising page is operated by the Republican digital ad firm WinRed.
The amount of money behind the ads is especially modest as the expenditures go. But the use of the platform is what important: former President Trump is raising funds on a giant social network that considers him an unwelcome person.
Facebook announced on Monday that Trump’s status on its platforms is unchanged.
According to Andy Stone, a spokesman for the organization, President Trump is suspended from Facebook so he can’t post at all”. “Groups affiliated with the former president are not barred from posting on Facebook so long as they are not posting in his voice.”
“In establishing the two year sanction for severe violations, we considered the need for it to be long enough to allow a safe period of time after the acts of incitement, to be significant enough to be a deterrent to Mr. Trump and others from committing such severe violations in future, and to be proportionate to the gravity of the violation itself,” said in a company blog post in June by Facebook Vice President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg.
The recent spending by Save America’s Joint Fundraising Committee on Facebook emphasizes that Trump’s Facebook suspension was only similar and voice, and not organizational.
Earlier this year, the website took down a video interview Lara Trump made with her father-in-law on grounds that he was basically complying with the ban by posting his words through a cutout.
The Facebook page run by Save America – which publishes under the username Team Trump – has going on posting on Facebook after the Capitol Hill riots. But it has rarely shown the type of provocative behavior that made Trump himself booted. The last post was in March wishing fans a happy St. Patrick’s Day.
The new ads also suggest that Trump’s aides realize the utility of the social media site in organizing and raising funds. The Trump campaign depended profoundly on Facebook to run small-dollar contributions apart from Trump connecting with his supporters through messages shared to his page.
Due to being banished from the platform, Trump has railed against the giant social media and its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, and indicated that he wouldn’t return to Facebook even with permission. “Next time I’m at the White House, there will be no more dinners, at his request, with Mark Zuckerberg and his wife. All will be business! “
Trump also declared the ban “an insult to the record-setting 75M people, plus many others, who voted for us in the 2020 Rigged Presidential Election. They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this censoring and silencing, and ultimately, we will win. Our Country can’t take this abuse anymore!”
In spite of the ban, Trump has still gone on to have a huge reach thanks to Trump-friendly pages like Breitbart News and “President Donald Trump Fan Club” based on a study by the New York Times.
