A top official told members of Congress on Wednesday that former President Donald Trump will be reinstated in August, which sparked concerns at the Department of Homeland Security, according to Politico’s report.
According to familiar sources, top DHS counterterrorism official John Cohen gave these concerns while speaking in a members-only briefing with the House Homeland Security Committee.
Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) reportedly asked Cohen how DHS is controlling the spread of disinformation and intrigue as well as how they fuel violence, especially showing the Trump reinstatement conspiracy theory that has become widespread QAnon followers.
Cohen announced that DHS is not conscious of any particular and reliable threats of violence related to the conspiracy theory that Donald Trump will be reinstated. He also said that DHS is following the topic discussions among extremist communities.
He replied that department officials are greatly concerned about it as it creates the false narrative that the election was rigged- a narrative that may make a strong response from extremists.
The topic of the briefing was domestic terrorism. Cohen also gave an important number of questions from members about violent crime, which has risen in 2020 and 2021. He stated that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has guided officials there to consider factors fueling the violence in the department’s mission.
This week, the Biden administration came up with a strategy to fight violent crime.
Conspiracy theorists- especially Mike Lindell, the pillow magnate who performs regularly in commercials on Fox News- have declared in recent months that former President Donald Trump will be reinstated as President in August, according to The New York Times’s Maggie Haberman and National Review.
Lindell stated to The Daily Beast that Trump likely achieved that conclusion because he has been promoting it. Commentator Charlie Sykes told MSNBC that the August date is “based on guesswork and conspiratorial theories tied to nonexistent election fraud in Arizona and a delusional hope that the Supreme Court will invalidate the election.”
“If Trump is saying August, that is probably because he heard me say it publicly,” Lindell answered.
Sidney Powell, who did legal work for Trump when he attempted to reverse the 2020 election results, told a QAnon conference earlier this year that he “can simply be reinstated.”
Almost one-third of Republican voters have believed in the conspiracy theory based on a Morning Consult/POLITICO survey this month. It traffics under the same themes of election fraud that prompted the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Republican members of Congress stopped an effort to build a 9/11-style commission to consider that attack. Speaker Nancy Pelosi proclaimed that she will establish a select committee to investigate the event.
While the Biden administration has put a priority on combating domestic terrorism. The White House published a strategy document earlier this month featuring their method to the issue. And the Department of Homeland Security has established a devoted team of intelligence analysts concentrated only on the topic. But the work has made concerns among civil liberties supports, who say they worry about extended government surveillance of activity the First Amendment protects- along with the possible different influence on marginalized communities.
30% of Republican voters agree with Donald Trump reinstatement conspiracy theory
According to a recent survey from The Hill/HarrisX, 30% of Republican voters believe it’s possible former President Donald Trump comes back to the White House this year.
Though the 45th President Donald Trump looms large over the Republican Party and may run for election in 2024, he will not be reinstated to the White House this year.
Seventy-seven percent of respondents stated that it’s not possible for Trump to be reinstated, including 70% of Republicans, 87% of Democrats, and 74% of independents. Thirteen percent of Democrats and 26% of independents said that it’s “somewhat” or “very” likely Trump is reinstated.
Biden has announced that he plans to run again in the upcoming 2024 election, so without contingencies, it’s unlikely he steps down. The only way to eliminate the Democrat before his term expires is through impeachment and conviction, or through the 25th Amendment if the vice president and Cabinet accept that he is incapable to do his missions.
Do you believe that is it possible for Trump to return to the White House? And what do you think about Trump’s August reinstatement conspiracy theory?
