On the 12th Date of Christmas

‘On the 12th Date of Christmas’ was filmed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which is also a popular choice for many Hallmark and Lifetime movies. Unlike many Hallmark movies, whose stories are often set in small towns, this is a surprising exception. Although it is a Christmas movie, was filmed in July and August, when the weather is still warm.

The makers in Winnipeg had to make some changes since the Covid situation emerged. These include the use of health monitors, limited access to the sets, strict procedures for the use of filming equipment, as well as the distribution of meals on sets. All of this was kept in mind during the filming of this movie. The production team made sure the crew felt safe and cared for. The movie also involved many retakes for which immense patience was required on behalf of everyone involved.

Hynes told ET that the film was shot as soon as production began post-pandemic and that the environment was kept very safe. He shared this behind-the-scenes video on Instagram during filming.

“It was honestly the best-case scenario I could possibly think of with the circumstances,” he said.

What’s special is that Winnipeg is also known for its multicultural identity as a city, offering the option of filming in urban landscapes as well as small towns. In ‘On the 12th Date of Christmas’, both of these settings are used because there are scenes in the city and also at the Christmas farm. Tourists love to visit Winnipeg because it hosts a variety of festivals every year such as the winter festival – Festival Du Voyageur, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and the Jazz Winnipeg Festival.

On the 12th Date of Christmas Hallmark Review

On the 12th Date of Christmas

‘On the December Date of Christmas’ is about game designs Jennifer and Aidan, who are paired up while working on an event organized by a hotel chain. They came up with the idea of creating a romantic scavenger hunt across the city of Chicago, called “12 Days of Christmas”. At first, they are not able to work synergistically because they aren’t used to each other’s working styles but eventually strike a connection stronger than a professional one.

Jennifer is a perfect main character made all the more likable by Jansen’s quirky performance. While Jennifer and Aiden both want a promotion to “main game creator”, there’s a real incentive for her to get the job done, get a promotion, or seriously consider moving back home to Iowa. She exudes warmth, sharp thinking, and sincere love for the job.

She relies entirely on the thinking element on her feet and completely sells her ideas – however, she has some trouble selling herself. The heart of ‘Day 12’ is witnessing Jennifer’s self-assuredness blossom right in front of the audience. While Jennifer believes she’s the best candidate for a promotion, she doesn’t quite exude confidence from the start.

Hynes brings a dry brusqueness to Aiden that seems a bit out of the standoffish – except when he’s around his niece and sister. He’s a lovely man, not mean or just a guy who doesn’t like the holidays for some reason.

He’s just a task-focused guy who does his best work on his own terms and doesn’t exactly cooperate very well. But since he’s Tyler Hynes, he delivers the role brilliantly – both as the initially reluctant Aiden and the increasingly warm “funny uncle”.

On the 12th Date of Christmas

From a story perspective, ’12th Date’ takes a while to find traction. First, the script has to establish that Jennifer and Aiden are “game creators”, something that seems rather absurd as a career. Then it had to put Jennifer and Aiden in a corner — as one client asked them to come up with some crazy scavenger hunt-type games all over Chicago.

The problem is the combination of the characters’ dynamic and the performances. The movie wants me to be team Jennifer & Aidan, but I’m definitely Team Jennifer & her Promotion. There’s an appeal to be found in this film, but the central romance felt flat.

Some of the best Hallmark movies have a super-linear and simple premise – but ‘The 12th’ doesn’t outdo itself, deftly manages some of the presentations and really film roots in Jennifer and Aiden. Honestly, the only thing stopping ‘On the 12th Date of Christmas’ from being an undeniable 5-star Hallmark movie is Aiden’s fill-in plot involving his grandfather’s repair upper house. The plot just feels so tight and just serves the story explicitly.

Final verdict

’12 Date’ is charming and romantic – and has a wonderful and powerful message about capable and creative women taking on and solving problems. If you’re looking for a Christmas movie for the whole family to enjoy together, this is an ideal choice.
