If you want to breathe a new life into ratty old t-shirts, then refer to how to cut a tshirt into a tank top, how to cut a tshirt cute, how to crop a tshirt, how to make t shirt quilt DIY, or how to cut a tshirt neck.
Recycling is a good thing to do. It makes people feel good to do it. The thing I want to emphasize is the vast difference between recycling for the purpose of feeling good and recycling for the purpose of solving the trash problem.
And today, we want to share with you how to make the easiest t-shirt yarn ever! Making T-shirt yarn is a great idea to repurpose t-shirts you aren’t wearing anymore, and the fabric is stretchy but durable. There are various ways on how to make tshirt yarn, but this is one of the simplest and quickest methods.
What Is Tshirt Yarn
Simply a yarn has been made out of a t-shirt. T-shirt yarn is one of the greatest craft materials as it’s eco-friendly and sustainable.
How to Make TShirt Yarn
Make sure to choose the shirts that are cotton jerseys (preferably 95% or more!) and not any blend of fabrics. Polyester and cotton blends are also a good choice.
Furthermore, shirts that don’t have side seams make the smoothest yarn.
Follow these simple instructions on how to make tshirt yarn.
Step 1: Prepare The Shirt
Before you start making the t-shirt yarn, wash and dries the shirt to ensure there is no dirty stain on it.
Place your shirt flat on a table or flat surface and smooth out any wrinkles. Next, take your fabric scissors (or rotary cutter) and cut off the bottom hemmed edge of the shirt.
Then, cut a straight line from one armpit to the other. Be sure to cut through both layers of the tee. This will leave you with a rectangular piece of the shirt fabric.
Fold your piece in half, bringing both closed edges together, so there is about an inch from the top edge.
Step 2: Cutting Strips
Decide how wide you want your T-shirt yarn to be. The wider the strips are, the heavier your yarn will be. The ideal strip is about 1 – 1/2 inches. You shouldn’t cut less than 1/2 inch as the yarn can be unstable.
So, starting at one edge of your fabric, cut a 1-1/2″ strip, straight line from the bottom to about 1 inch from the top fold. Remember not to cut all the way to the end.
Repeat until you have cut strips all across the tee. Try to cut the same width across all of your strips, but don’t worry if they are not perfect.
Step 3: Connecting The Strips
Now, you’ll cut in diagonals. Diagonally cut from the outside edge to the point where you ended cutting the first strip. This will be the beginning of your t-shirt yarn.
Step 4: Making the Second Cut
The second strip will be cut from the cut end on the bottom to the cut end at the top of the next strip.
Keep on cutting all across until you reach the end.
Step 5: Stretching Your Yarn
If you wish to curl your yarn, all you need to do is to pull and stretch it between your hands. The strip will curl up and thin immediately.
Step 6: Roll the Yarn
When your t-shirt yarn is stretched and pulled, roll and wrap it into a ball. Repeat this step with every color you want to use.
