History of Philippine Independence Day

Since the mid-16th century, the Philippines has been part of the Spanish Empire. A secret group called ”Katipunan” consisting of Filipino activists who wanted independence was exposed in 1896. This led to the beginning of the independence struggle.

By 1987, an armistice was signed between the revolutionaries and the Spaniards with the recolution’s leaders accepting exile outsite the Philippines.

In 1988, after the Spanish attacked American interests in the region during the Spanish-American War. The United States supported the independence movement, bringing back the rebel leader Emilio Aguinaldo from exile, who gathered the support of the locals in the Philippines.

Allied against the Spaniards with American forces, more than 300 hundred years of Spanish rule ended when Aguinaldo declared Philippine independence in Kawit, Cavite, on June 12, 1898.

Under the Treaty of Paris, Spain agreed to cede the Philippines to the US in a payment of twenty million dollars.

A year later, some Filipinos began to feel that the country was only moving from Spanish rule to American rule, leading to the Philippine-American War. The result of that was the suppression of the Filipino uprising and the ongoing American occupation with limited self-rule.

It was not until July 4, 1946, that the Philippines gained full independence.

Originally, Filipinos celebrated Independence Day on July 4, the same day as Independence Day in the US. Until 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal changed this date to June 12 to commemorate the end of Spanish rule over the country.

One Public Holiday, 16 Flag Days

By order of President Fidel V. Ramos in Decree No. 179 of 1994, Independence Day will be celebrated for 16 days, from May 28th to June 12th. Through this decree, the period of time designated as the flag date. In which all offices, government agencies, businesses, academic institutions and private homes are required to fly the Philippine flag.

The Philippine flag was adopted in May 1898. Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista mentioned in the Declaration of Independence of 1898 that the meaning of the three colors – red, white and blue, was a debt of gratitude honoring the flag of America.

However, this was later opposed by Emilio Aguinaldo. He made it clear that the red color represented the bravery of the Filipino, blue symbolized how Filipinos would rather die than surrender to the enemy and the white color stood for the peaceful love of the Filipino.

What do People do?

In the Philippines, Independence Day is a day when many people, including employees, students and even government officials, join nationwide parades. The main highlight, however, is the police and military parade in Manila led by the country’s incumbent president. This is followed by a speech and a 21-gun salute. 

Others spend their days in parks and malls. Many Filipino communities living in other countries also celebrate the country’s Independence Day.

Public Life

Philippine Independence Day is a national holiday so government offices are closed. Schools are also closed on this day. Many businesses have to close, except for shopping malls. Public transport such as passenger jeeps, buses and tricycles will still operate but their routes may be restricted due to the closure of streets for parades.
