Liberos can come in and out of the game as wanted and without counting against a team’s substitutions. So a different color shirt will make it easier for referees to identify.
Is the libero the best player?
No, the best player is the defensive specialists because they can play any spot on the court.
Can the libero serve?
According to the international rules, the liberos are not allowed to serve. But they may serve as long as it is only in that rotation for the rest of the game in college, high school, or middle school in the USA.
Why does the setter wear a different color?
No, in volleyball, only the libero wears a different color jersey than other teammates. Because the liberos can come in and leave the lineup freely, without counting against the team’s substitutions.
How many different positions are there in volleyball?
As a true volleyball lover, you may know how many different positions are there in volleyball. There are six Volleyball positions on a volleyball court and each position plays a different role in the team’s success. Just like other competitive teams, you need to depend on every player to do their job well. Volleyball is greatly fast-paced and demands serious athletic ability.
Depending on your skill-set and which aspect of the game you excel in the most, you can know which of these six Volleyball positions you will take charge of.
The setter is the key contributor to the offense of the volleyball team. One of the requirements of the setter is to have a delicate touch to perfectly place the ball for one of the attacking players. Communication is truly significant for the setter since they need to get the rest of the players on the same page. If not having the setter, there would be no tough spikes or technical ball movement.
The outside hitter is also called the left-side hitter and the main attacker in the offensive strategy. To be a successful outside hitter, you must have a good jumping ability and always be ready to adapt to different circumstances. The volleyball won’t always be put where the outsider hitter would like, so they need to prepare for hits from various places.
This position is also known as the right-side hitter. Opposite hitters need to have the most versatility and be perfect on both offense and defense. Like the outside hitter, the opposite hitter also needs to own solid jumping skills.
In addition, they must be able to hit the ball from the front and back rows. Opposite hitters also need to be ready to place the ball if the setter is unable to do so. Defensively, they line up against the opponent’s outside hitter and need to have the ability to work with the middle blocker on blocks.
Known as the middle hitter, the middle blocker is the tallest athlete on the volleyball team. Their additional height can help them excel in this role.
On defense, the middle blocker blocks the center area of the net and must be ready for the opponent’s fast middle attacks. However, they also need to move to either side to support teammates close blocks with the opposing hitter and the outside hitter.
On offense, the middle hitters play close by the setter to perform quick attacks. They have to be able to read the setter and modify their approach to take advantage of their attack. They can also act as a decoy to distract opponents and spread out their blockers.
The libero can be confusing for non-volleyball players. This position concentrates on defense. They can only play on the back row of the court, and be great to receive the attack or serve. There are some set rules that the libero must follow, such as not attacking the ball above the height of the net, not setting an attacker from the front, and more. Liberos wear different colored jerseys to distinguish themselves from the rest of the team.
The key different thing between the defensive specialist and other volleyball positions is their ability to replace out any player on the court. This will count against the team’s total of 12 substitutions. The defensive specialist usually concentrates on ball control and passing and works well with liberos.
So, do you know how many players are on the court for one team in an official volleyball game?
Why does one volleyball player have a different color shirt volleyball?
The player with a different color shirt volleyball on the court is called a libero. The libero is required to wear a different color shirt volleyball. Liberos can come in and out of the game many times as needed and without count against a team’s substitutions.
But because of the defensive nature of the position, there are some things that a libero can’t do, such as serve, block, or play an attacking shot. According to the FIVB’s rules, “If the libero makes an overhead set of the ball in front of the 3-meter attack line, the ball may not be spiked over by the team. If the libero makes the same action behind the front zone, the ball may be freely attacked.”
That’s why the libero has to wear a different color shirt volleyball to distinguish from other teammates and make it easier for referees to implement those rules.
