Mother’s day definition

Celebrating Mother's Day

A mother is present in every stage of our lives, from feeding us our first morsel to hearing our first words to handling our tantrums.

A mother’s day celebration is a day to honor our mothers’ selfless love and every sacrifice they make for their children. People celebrate mothers, mother-like figures in their lives, and even grandmothers on this day.

Mother’s Day or Mothers’ Day

The official name of this holiday is Mother’s Day. Of course, grammatically, it could be Mothers’ Day (i.e., a day to celebrate all the mothers in the world). Mother’s Day, on the other hand, is the version used in the law that made the day an official holiday in the United States, and this is used as a precedent.

When is Mother’s Day?

A mother’s day celebration is observed on various dates around the world. Mother’s Day is observed on the second Sunday of May in many countries and will be observed on May 8, 2022, this year.

Mothers day significance

Why to celebrate mother’s day? Mother’s Day recognizes the contributions our mothers make in our lives, which are often overlooked. Furthermore, our mothers rarely have time to care for themselves because patriarchal society has taught them that they should not take a break. Caring for their children and families takes precedence.

However, this should not be the case. So, for celebrating mother’s day, let us remember to always show our appreciation for what our mothers do for us and to advocate for their rights. On this day, we also recognize every mother’s incalculable and selfless contribution to her children’s success. The mothers day significance is that it is a day to express gratitude to her for everything.

What are the origins of mother’s day?

Mother’s Day has existed for as long as, well, mothers have existed. Celebrating mother’s day in ancient times was frequently linked to gods and goddesses, as well as maternal symbols of fertility, birth, creativity, and growth cycles. The mother is the protector and nourisher of children, and thus of humanity as a whole.

The Phrygians celebrated Cybele with a festival. The Greeks and Romans both revered their gods’ mothers.

People would return to their “mother” church once a year during the middle of Lent during the Middle Ages. (Back then, children as young as 10 would frequently leave for work!) Historians believe that the return to the “mother” church was responsible for the tradition of children taking the day off for their mom.

On the fourth Sunday of Lent, children – mostly daughters who had gone to work as domestic servants – would be given the day off to return to their mothers and home parish. The eldest son or daughter would bring a “mothering cake,” which the entire family would cut and share for celebrating mother’s day

Family reunions were the order of the day, with sons and daughters taking overall household responsibilities and preparing a special dinner in honor of their mother. The mother would take her family to special church services during the day.

Mothering Sunday, also known as Refreshment Sunday, was a day when fasting rules were relaxed. A Simnel cake is a traditional fruit cake with two layers of almond paste. On top of the cake were 11 balls of marzipan icing, representing the 11 disciples. (Judas is not among them.) Sugar violets were traditionally added as well.

Julia Ward Howe, Ann Reeves Jarvis, and Ann’s daughter, Anna M. Jarvis, were instrumental in establishing the tradition of what are the origins of mother’s day in the United States.
